Astronomy is an interesting and famous field but most of its lovers don’t even know about the people who laid its foundation. In this blog we are going to learn about Jantar Mantar that was commissioned by Sawai Jai Singh II, a Rajput ruler, mathematician and astronomer.

1.The Brihat Samrat Yantra – It is the largest sundial in the world ever made. The base of its gnomon is about 44 metres long and looks exquisite.

2.Jai Prakash Yantra – It means the Light of Jai. It consists of two concave hemispherical marble bowls about 5.5 metres in diameter.

3.Ram Yantra – This massive instrument measures the altitude and the azimuth of the celestial bodies.

4.Narivalaya Yantra – It is an equatorial sundial of a different design from the Laghu Samrat Yantra but performs the same function. It measures the local solar time at the latitude of Jaipur.

There are many more instruments at the Jantar Mantar complex such as the Sasthamsa Yantra, the Krantivritta Yantra and the Palabha Yantra. This made us realise that despite the lack of resources and technology, Sawai Jai Singh II invented instruments of marvellous achievement
