Agra is an amazing city famous for its Mughal history. Every Indian has heard of Agra and knows of its significance. There are many historic monuments situated in Agra. Some of the famous monuments in Agra are Fatehpur Sikri, the Agra Fort, and the jewel of Agra, the Taj Mahal.

One of the well known Mughal emperors was Shah Jahan. He was the fifth Mughal emperor to rule the Indian subcontinent. Shah Jahan got married to Mumtaz Mahal. Unfortunately, Mumtaz died during childbirth. In her loving memory, Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj Mahal. The marble and the precious stones used for its construction were ordered from all over the world.

The Taj Mahal has four gates. The east gate was meant for special guests, west gate for the locals, north gate for the royalty, and south gate for the workers. It took 22 years to build this marvel. The Taj Mahal’s architecture is a blend of Indian and Persian styles. It is beautifully adorned with designs of flowers and Arabic calligraphy. The four minarets of the Taj Mahal are tilted 2 degrees outward. The logic behind this is that if an earthquake strikes, the minarets will not fall on the tomb. The Taj Mahal was built as a mausoleum for Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. It originally only had Mumtaz’s tomb. Shah Jahan wanted to build black Taj Mahal for his own tomb. But his son, Aurangzeb, arrested him before he could finish building it.

Overall, Agra is a magnificent city and is home to the timeless treasures like the Taj Mahal. Built by the mighty Mughals, Agra truly has some great places to visit.
