On our exciting journey through the jungles of Jim Corbett National Park, we learnt about the important history behind its name. It was named after Edward James Corbett, a hunter and naturalist.

Edward James Corbett was born on 25 July, 1875 in Nainital. Also known as Jim Corbett, he killed many man-eaters including 19 tigers and 14 leopards. His first book ‘Man-eaters of Kumaon’ has been translated into 27 languages. Tigers command the Asian landscape as the top predator. They are huge, muscular, and magnificent animals armed with razored claws and massive canines. After realising that wildlife needs to be protected from merciless hunters, Jim Corbett dedicated his life to wildlife conservation.

Jim Corbett National Park is situated in the deep forests of Nainital district in Uttarakhand. Previously known as Hailey National Park, it was the first national park in Asia. The park has been divided into 7 safari zones to promote tourism among the people who are interested to see the animals. Due to the decrease in the number of tigers, the government has taken steps to protect their home. Project Tiger is one such mission launched by the government of India in 1973. This was launched to maintain the tiger population in the country and protect them from poaching. It was first implemented in Jim Corbett National Park. This national park is an abode for more than 250 tigers, a number achieved due to the lush forest cover and good air quality. We have to protect them from poaching as they are hunted and their body parts are used to make various products. Their fur is burnt to drive away centipedes. Also, their teeth are used to make different medicines and their skin is used to make cloth.

For centuries, tigers have inspired awe, reverence and sometimes terror in the humans they’ve lived beside. We humans acted inhumane and killed them for money. Therefore, we all vow that we would never hurt animals ever again.
