Stargazing in the Hills of Lansdowne 2026
We started our journey with sun observation, followed by stargazing and astronomy activities. The following day, we went for a hike, and on the last day, we explored tourist places around Lansdowne. We reached Lansdowne late in the morning and began our journey by observing the Sun. We saw sunspots on the surface of the Sun using telescopes with special filters. At night, we observed the Moon, Jupiter, and Venus. The following day, we departed for a hike, and it took us around 3 hours to reach Tip-in-Top, a famous viewpoint from where the Himalayas are visible.
That night, we observed different constellations like Ursa Major, Leo, Gemini, Taurus, and the North Star. We also observed satellites and a dying star. Then at 3 am, we observed stars from the Scorpio and Sagittarius constellations along with the Milky Way Galaxy. On the morning of the last day, we visited the Officers’ Mess of the Garhwal Regiment and its museum, where we learnt about the history of the Garhwal Regiment from 1887 till today. We also learnt about sundials and snowline dials. In the afternoon, after lunch, we went to the market and saw wooden handicrafts and leather work. After shopping, we visited Bhulla Taal, where “Bhulla” means elder brother, and it is one of the major tourist attractions of Lansdowne.
This journey to Lansdowne opened many opportunities for us to learn about the universe and the history of the town. We learnt about astronomy and were able to see constellations and understand how they represent different figures and animals. The Officers’ Mess had many taxidermied animals and preserved historical objects. We also visited the beautiful man-made Bhulla Taal Lake. Lansdowne is truly a place full of preserved culture and natural beauty worth visiting.
