The Explorers of Somnath Temple 2026

Have you ever wondered what Gir, the home of the Asiatic lion, has been hiding? One of the places we visited near Gir was Somnath. The temple we see now was reconstructed in 1951 in the Chalukya style. During our visit, we noticed how the temple stands strongly facing the Arabian Sea, symbolising both spiritual strength and geographical significance.

Somnath Temple stands at Prabhas Patan near Veraval, on the Arabian Sea coast. It is the first of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. The reconstructed Somnath Temple was inaugurated by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad. The temple features intricate carvings and detailed stone sculptures. A 155-feet-high flag mast (shikhara) rises above the structure. More than 9 million pilgrims visit Somnath every year. We learnt that the temple’s location is considered sacred because it lies at a point where there is no land between it and the South Pole, which made us appreciate its unique positioning even more.

The temple stands near Triveni Sangam, where the Kapila, Hiran, and mythical Saraswati rivers meet. According to tradition, the Moon God Soma built the first temple to thank Lord Shiva for freeing him from a curse. In 1026 CE, Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and looted the Somnath Temple. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt multiple times, and in 1783, Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore constructed a temple near the original site. We hope that many people get the opportunity to visit the prestigious Somnath Temple and pay their respects to Lord Shiva. We also hope that visitors enjoy learning about its history, architecture, and religious importance. For us, the visit was not only spiritual but also a lesson in history, geography, and cultural continuity.
