The Essence of Uttarakhand’s Eco-Friendly Tourism 2026
Uttarakhand, located in the Himalayas, is known for its magnificent mountains, forests, and rivers. We visited Mussoorie, which attracts over 21 lakh tourists every year with its natural beauty and peaceful environment. We learnt that tourism contributes more than 40% to Uttarakhand’s economy.
Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, Uttarakhand is renowned for its scenic landscapes and natural splendours. It is also known for thrilling activities such as river rafting in the Ganga, which flows through the holy land of Rishikesh, one of India’s top rafting destinations. In Mussoorie, we also visited George Everest House and walked along Mall Road and enjoyed views of the Doon Valley.
During our visit to Mussoorie, we realised how adventure tourism is managed with environmental awareness through practices such as waste management, controlled tourist activities, and conservation efforts. We also learnt that ecotourism encourages travellers to respect and preserve the environment. The state is also home to rich biodiversity, including protected areas like Jim Corbett National Park, India’s oldest national park, established in 1936. The park shelters species such as the Royal Bengal Tiger, elephants, and over 600 bird species. These reserves play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. We were impressed by how nature and conservation go hand in hand in Uttarakhand.
The forests, rivers, and wildlife make Uttarakhand a unique and enriching destination. Additionally, the cultural heritage and simple lifestyle of local communities enhance the ecotourism experience by offering visitors a deeper understanding of local traditions and ways of life. We felt that responsible tourism not only protects the environment but also supports local livelihoods, making our trip both enjoyable and meaningful.
