Magnificent Mysore Palace 2023

We felt that the Indian modern architecture is nothing compared to the timeless beauty of Mysore Palace. We learnt about the history of and the rituals followed by the kings who resided in this palace.

The Mysore Palace we see today was originally made of wood. Unfortunately, it was burnt down. During the reign of the 24th King of Mysore, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar built the new magnificent Mysore Palace. Construction of the new palace was completed in 1912 at a cost of Rs. 41, 47,913. The new palace was built of stone so it wouldn’t be easily destroyed. The palace is also known as Amba Vilas Palace. The portrait gallery in the palace contains the portraits of the royal family that were painted by 6 expert artists. The architecture is inspired from Islamic, Gothic and Rajput styles. Henry Irwin from England came to Mysore to help design the palace. The tiles were specially imported from Scotland by the King.

The Mysore Palace has a long tradition of celebrating the Mysore Dasara with grandeur. As part of the tradition, during the festival, the former King would be seated on his golden howdah (carriage), and then paraded around Mysore on beautifully decorated elephants. The invited officials, including the royal family, would gather in the courtyard to watch a wrestling match.

We enjoyed exploring the mighty Mysore Palace and learning about its history. We were awe-struck to see the beautiful architecture and design, well executed by the 24th King of the Wadiyar Dynasty.
