Learning History through Architecture 2025

Back to wall

Our visit to Jaipur was exciting and full of learning. One of the most memorable places we visited was the Amber Fort, which was built in the late 16th century by Raja Man Singh, an important military leader in Emperor Akbar’s imperial army. It was later expanded by other rulers, including Maharana Sawai Jai Singh II. The palace is built amidst the Aravalli Hills, about 11 km north of Jaipur.

We were amazed to see the grand entrances like the Ganesh Pol, which featured paintings of Lord Ganesha. Our tour guide told us that the Ganesh Pol was used as a private entrance for the royal family to reach the palace area. The Mughal Garden, also known as the Char Bagh, is located between Jai Mandir and Sukh Niwas, and was built by Mirza Raja Jai Singh.

The fort is built using pale yellow and pink sandstone, which gives it a majestic appearance. Inside the fort, we were fascinated to see the Sheesh Mahal, also known as Jai Mandir. We felt that the small mirrors covering the walls and ceilings created a magical effect. Our guide showed us how flashing a light on the roof made the ceiling and walls of the palace sparkle like stars or glitter like a jewel box. The Sheesh Mahal was definitely our favourite part of the visit.

Throughout the visit, our tour guide explained the fort’s history and architecture in a simple and interesting way. This helped us learn the importance of the Amber Fort better. We understood that learning history at the actual site made the experience more meaningful and enjoyable. Overall, our trip to Amber Fort was fun, educational, and memorable.
