Jantar Mantar: Where Science Meets Architecture 2025
On our journey to Jaipur, we visited Jantar Mantar. Jantar means instrument and Mantar means calculation. Jantar Mantar is a remarkable place where science meets architecture. Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, it was one of India’s most important astronomical observatories. During our visit to Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, we learnt that the site was designed to study celestial movements, using precise mathematical principles.
Our visit to Jantar Mantar was a unique experience because it was not a palace or a fort, but an open-air astronomical observatory used to observe the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. It houses several large stone instruments, each created for a specific purpose. Our tour guide told us that these instruments were carefully positioned to give accurate readings without the use of modern technology.
Some of the important instruments include the Dhruv Darshak Pattika (Pole Star viewing plate), Prakash Yantra (celestial coordinate map), Vrihat Samrat Yantra (the world’s largest stone sundial), Ram Yantra (used to measure altitude), and Rashi Yantra (used to draw zodiac charts). Among all these, the Rashi Yantra fascinated us the most. We felt that it was amazing to see how ancient scientists understood astronomy with such clarity and precision.
As we walked around the observatory, the open and interactive layout made learning enjoyable. The information plaques explained how each instrument worked, making the concepts easier to understand. Jantar Mantar is a place that should not be missed, especially for curious minds and those who love ancient technology, as it allows you to understand time and space without the use of a modern clock. Overall, our visit to Jantar Mantar was both educational and enjoyable.
