Marvels of the Great City- Chhatrapati Sambajinagar 2025

Chhatrapati Sambajinagar, located in Maharashtra, is a city of rich cultural heritage and remarkable history. Some historical places in and around the city are Daulatabad Fort, Bibi ka Maqbara, Grishneshwar Temple, and Ellora Caves.

The city was initially known as Khadki and then renamed Aurangabad after the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. It boasts a diverse heritage shaped by different dynasties that ruled over it. The Yadava dynasty built the majestic Daulatabad Fort between 1187 CE – 1308 CE. The fort is known to house several large canons including the Mendha Tope.

We found it interesting that Bibi ka Maqbara resembled the Taj Mahal and hence, is also called ‘Taj of the Deccan.’ It was commissioned by Aurangzeb in the memory of his wife, Dilraz Banu Begum, and contains her tomb. Its construction was completed by Aurangzeb’s son.

We learnt that the Ellora caves are locally known as ‘Verul Leni.’ This group of 34 caves were beautiful and the carvings on the cave walls were splendid. The Ellora Caves were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Each cave was built from a single volcanic basalt rock. We also visited the Grishneshwar temple, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and built in the 8th century.

Aurangabad was officially renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2023. We conclude from our experience that Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is not a regular city, it is a city with a lot of remarkable history and cultural significance. Our trip to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar was a very memorable landmark in our life.
