Our Exciting Visit to the Statue of Unity 2025

Back to wall

On our school trip, we visited the Statue of Unity, which is a large statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. While exploring the statue, we learnt that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India’s first Home Minister & Deputy Prime Minister. Sardar Patel got inspired by Mahatma Gandhi when Patel worked with him as a member of the Gujarat Sabha.

The Statue of Unity is located in Kevadia, Gujarat. The statue is 182 metres tall. It is also the tallest statue in the world. We also learnt that the statue is made of steel, concrete, brass, and bronze to maintain its strong structure. For his role in the Indian independence movement, Sardar Patel is known as the Iron Man of India. Sardar Patel was also honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1991. Interestingly, the statue is built on a small island on the Narmada River.

The statue’s construction was completed in 33 months and was inaugurated in 2018, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The best part is that a huge amount of iron was recycled to make its base. The campaign to collect iron for recycling was called The Loha Campaign. When we were travelling to the statue, it was so tall that we could see it from our bus even from a distance. So, our guide told us that the statue can be seen from anywhere within a seven-kilometre radius.

The sculptor, Ram V. Sutar, was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his work in sculpting the statue. The Statue of Unity is divided into five zones, out of which only three zones are accessible to the common public. This school trip taught us how to be a good leader. We also enjoyed having fun with our friends while learning together.
