Poaching and Its Impact on Ecosystem 2024

Back to wall

During our educational trip to Ranthambore, we learnt about the serious issue of poaching and its harmful effects on wildlife. Poaching might seem like a way to meet demands for things like medicine, but it comes at a huge cost to the animals involved. We discovered that the consequences of poaching can be devastating, not just for the animals being hunted, but for the entire ecosystem. For example, the National Tiger Conservation Authority of India reported that the number of tigers in Ranthambore increased from 63 in 2019 to 80 in 2021, thanks to conservation efforts. However, poaching still remains a significant threat to these creatures.

To prevent poaching, the government has put strict rules in place, especially in tiger reserves like Ranthambore. In 2018, the Rajasthan government introduced thermal cameras and watchtowers to monitor and track illegal poaching activities. Tigers are extremely important for maintaining the balance of the food chain, and if they are poached, it can cause severe harm to the environment. We learnt that poaching tigers can upset the balance of the ecosystem.

Poaching is a global issue, and while the government has made great efforts to protect wildlife, it is also up to us to follow the rules and contribute to conservation. WWF works hard to help countries comply with international agreements on the conservation of endangered species. From our visit, we understood that poaching can lead to deforestation and harm to many animals, and if we don’t stop it, the future of both wildlife and humans could be at risk.
