The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib or Sri Darbar Sahib, is the holiest Sikh shrine in the world. The name Sri Harmandir Sahib comes from two words: ‘Hari’, signifying God, and ‘mandir’, meaning temple. The addition of ‘Sahib’ to its name is a way to show reverence and respect in Sikh tradition. It is a symbol of humility and brotherhood. The temple not only offers a deep spiritual experience to the visitors but also teaches a valuable lesson in equality, service, and community.

The construction of the Golden Temple started in 1574 and was completed in 1601, lasting over a span of 27 years under the leadership of Sikh Gurus. While the temple was founded by Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji, the construction of the temple and its pool was continued by Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The name “Golden Temple” comes from the golden lotus-shaped dome on top of the structure. The legendary Sikh ruler, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, had its upper floors covered in 750 kilograms of pure gold. The decorative marble designs on its walls have historical significance. The fusion of Islamic and Hindu styles of architecture reflects Sikhism’s philosophy.

The four entrances located in the four directions, North, South, East, and West, signify that Sikhism treats people of all castes, creeds, religions, genders, and cultures equally. The Gurdwara offers a kind and holy welcome as a symbol of love towards every caste and religion.
