Discovering Jaipur’s Tradition Through Block Printing 2026

Back to wall

We, the students of Summer Fields School, embarked on an educational journey to Jaipur organised by Edterra, where we took part in many fun and meaningful activities. During the visit, we explored blue pottery and a media project, but the activity that interested us the most was block printing, a traditional textile art of Jaipur, Rajasthan. We learnt that block printing is a multistep process in which artisans use hand-carved wooden blocks to imprint designs onto fabric. This traditional art form has been practised in India for over 500 years. At the workshop, we were shown how each stage is carefully carried out, including fabric preparation, block carving, dyeing, and printing, which require great skill and patience. We also noticed that each colour needs a different block, making the process detailed and time-consuming.

We were fascinated by the bold patterns, bright colours, and intricate designs on the blocks. We learnt that regions like Sanganer and Bagru are famous worldwide for their printed textiles. We were also told that natural dyes are often used in traditional methods, making the process eco-friendly. We learnt that in earlier times, royal families such as the Rajputs supported and promoted block printing. We realised that even today, this craft supports many artisans and their families. It helps connect the people of Jaipur to their traditions and history.

Block printing is a wonderful and meaningful art form that combines creativity, tradition, and skill. We believe that everyone should experience block printing at least once in their life. We should value this craft and support the artisans so that it continues to grow and inspire tourists and future generations.
