Amber Fort: Embracing Rajput Heritage 2026

Back to wall

Constructed in red sandstone and white marble, Amber Fort is located about 11 kilometres from Jaipur. Admired by locals and loved by tourists, it was a major landmark, built in the late 16th century by Raja Man Singh I, with further additions made by Sawai Jai Singh II. From intricate mirror work to detailed frescoes, the fort offers a truly remarkable experience.

We explored the outer boundaries of Amber Fort and observed the massive gates and walls built for protection. At the base of the fort lies Maota Lake, an artificial lake designed to collect rainwater flowing down from the nearby hills. We learnt that this lake served as the primary water source for the fort and its residents. Spread across an area of about four square kilometres, the fort is laid out over four levels and includes the Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, and Sukh Niwas. Inside the complex, we focused on the intricate details of the design. The Sheesh Mahal is one of the most stunning parts of the fort. Its expansive walls are adorned with convex mirrors imported from Belgium. It served as a recreational space for the king and queen and is famous for its star-like ceilings. The fort is also one of the earliest examples of a fusion between simple Rajput design and Mughal architecture.

Amber Fort is a must-visit for those interested in architecture and detailed design. The palace offers several majestic sights. With its unique features, Amber Fort stands as an inspiring monument that reflects the blending of cultures.
