During our educational journey to Jaipur, we visited the Amber Fort, also called Amer Fort. It was built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I and later expanded by other kings. It is made of red sandstone and marble and shows a mix of Rajput and Mughal architecture. The fort overlooks Maota Lake and is laid out in four main levels. First is the Diwan-i-Aam, the hall of public audience where the common people shared their grievances. Then there is the Diwan-i-Khas, the hall of private audience where the king met important guests. We realised that the magnificence of the Amber Fort symbolised the contrast between the lives of the rich and the poor in Jaipur. The fort also has old tunnels that connect the Amber Fort to the nearby Jaigarh Fort. The tunnels were once used for protection and safe movement during wars.

The Sheesh Mahal was especially beautiful. Its walls and ceilings are covered with thousands of tiny mirrors that sparkle in the light. The mirrors were arranged so that even a small lamp could light up the whole hall. The walls also had painted designs that depicted flowers and birds. We learnt that people in the past used this hall for special celebrations. The Sukh Niwas, or Hall of Pleasure, had a special system with water channels that helped cool the room long before modern air conditioning came into existence.

While climbing up the steps to the fort complex, we saw many ladies selling delicious guavas. The goats, dogs, and langurs that roamed the fort premises were also an interesting sight. The Amber Fort complex was a marvellous site to explore. It not only made us feel closer to our culture but also helped us see the beauty of history.
