The Heart-Wrenching Tragedy of Jallianwala Bagh 2023

Back to wall

The sound of gunshots still echo in the peaceful gardens of Jallianwala. The story of Jallianwala Bagh can be traced back to the time when India was struggling for its independence. It is the time when the feeling of nationalism was at its peak.

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre was truly a turning point in the history of the Indian Independence Movement. A mere gathering of people became subject to the indiscriminate firing by the British soldiers. In the broad daylight of 13 April 1919, on the day of Baisakhi, the people of Amritsar assembled in Jallianwala Bagh for a peaceful protest against the Rowlett Act. A high-ranked British officer, General Dyer along with his troops approached the site and opened fire. All the exits were already closed by these troops. In order to escape the firing, many people even jumped into the wells. In a short time span, hundreds of people lost their lives, and over a thousand were injured.

This horrific incident left a great impact in the hearts of Indians. The act of the British was highly criticised and led to protests across the nation. The British meanwhile made all efforts to stimulate fear amongst the people in other cities. Despite the critical situation created by the British, people from different cities came forward and united for a greater cause.

Even after more than a hundred years, the massacre is still unforgettable. A memorial at the site of the massacre was established by the Government of India in 1951. The memorial commemorates the ones who lost their lives in the massacre.
