The magnificent Taj Mahal beholds many mysteries. It was built for Arjumand Banu Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal, by her husband, the fifth Mughal emperor Mirza Shahab ud-din-Mumammad Khurram or Shah Jahan.
Shah Jahan ruled the Mughal Empire from 1628-1658 CE. He built the Taj Mahal as a tomb for Mumtaz Mahal, his favourite wife. It took 20,000 workers 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. Because of its splendour, it is now known as one of the seven wonders of the world. Did you know that the minarets of the Taj Mahal are tilted outwards, so as to prevent them from falling onto the tomb inside Taj Mahal in case of an earthquake. Contrary to popular belief, when the Taj Mahal was completed, the hands of the workers were not cut. Instead the workers just signed a contract to not build anything similar.
The Taj Mahal is symmetrical! It has 16 gardens called Charbaghs, which were unique Mughal-era geometrically arranged gardens. The onion dome adorning the Taj Mahal is 23 metres high. There are 22 smaller domes on the gate to show that it took 22 years to build the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal cost 827 million dollars in current day value. The original Taj Mahal was built using white marble. Shah Jahan also wanted to make another Taj Mahal for himself using black onyx stone from Belgium. But the construction of the black Taj Mahal never began.
We had a wonderful time at the Taj Mahal and learnt many new interesting facts about one of the greatest wonders of the world. Taj Mahal is and will remain a wonderful work of architecture.
