Our Journey Through Dandeli, the Kingdom of Big Cats 2023

We commenced on a four-day long school trip to Dandeli. We were captivated by the unparalleled beauty of this nature’s paradise. We had never experienced the beauty of nature in such proximity before.

On our first day in Dandeli, we embarked on a jungle safari in the Kali Tiger Reserve. A fifteen-kilometer-long drive took us deep into the forest, with the first eleven kilometers passing through primitive woodlands where we encountered wild boars, crocodiles and rare birds like hornbills. The subsequent four-kilometer drive proved to be the highlight, allowing us to spot deer, leopards, tigers and gaur among other wild animals. When we spotted the leopards, they were lounging on the lower branches of trees. Observing spotted deer, we learnt that the males possess horns while females do not. The reserve is rich in teakwood, rosewood, eucalyptus, and many other medicinal trees.

Kali Tiger Reserve, spanning more than eight hundred square kilometers, is renowned for boasting a population of endangered black panthers and vulnerable hornbills. It holds one of the highest populations of the Great Pied Hornbills in the Western Ghats.

The place left an indelible mark on our hearts. The diverse flora and fauna encountered here are unmatched. Our interactions with the local tribal communities, coupled with sightings of magnificent birds like hornbills and previously unknown animals expanded our understanding. Reflecting on our experiences, we unanimously agree that Dandeli is a heaven for nature enthusiasts. This destination deserves a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate the wonders of the natural world.
