Exploring Islamic Architecture in India 2025

As students from the UAE visiting India’s famous Golden Triangle—Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur—we were fascinated by the deep historical connections between Indian and Islamic architecture. From grand mosques to stunning palaces, the influence of Persian, Central Asian, and Mughal styles is evident in the intricate designs, domes, and minarets that define many of India’s most iconic landmarks.

Our journey began in Delhi, where we explored the breathtaking Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 12th century, this towering minaret reflects early Indo-Islamic architecture. We found the Arabic calligraphy on the minaret very fascinating. We also visited Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India. Its imposing red sandstone and white marble domes reminded us of the grand mosques back home in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Next, in Agra, we were mesmerised by the Taj Mahal, a symbol of love and one of the most famous Islamic architectural wonders in the world. The symmetrical gardens, inscriptions, and detailed floral carvings reminded us of the intricate artistry seen in mosques across the Middle East. As we admired the beautiful marble structure, we couldn’t help but compare it to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Both are masterpieces reflecting the beauty of Islamic art and culture. In Jaipur, we visited Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal. It was amazing to see how Mughal architectural elements like intricate lattice work and grand archways blended seamlessly with Rajput architecture.

This journey through India’s architectural wonders helped me appreciate the shared heritage between the UAE and India. Visiting these sites made us realise how art and architecture can transcend borders, connecting different parts of the world through shared traditions and craftsmanship.
