Amrabad Tiger Reserve: Home to the Chenchu Tribe of India 2023

Amrabad Tiger Reserve is located in the Nallamala Hills of the Eastern Ghats. With a total area of 2,611 square kilometres, Amrabad Tiger Reserve is the second-largest tiger reserve in terms of core area, but the sixth-largest tiger reserve in terms of total area in India. This tiger reserve offers a jungle safari experience to its visitors. More than eighty species of mammals, three hundred species of birds, twenty amphibians and fifty-four species of reptiles are present in the reserve. Roadside litter and rash driving by the visitors are threats to the flora and fauna of the forest.

Within the forest area, several tribal communities coexist with wildlife. Among these, the Chenchu tribe lives in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve area. The Chenchu tribe is one of India’s oldest aboriginal tribes. The Chenchus mainly inhabit the Nallamala Hills in southeastern India comprising parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. We learnt that Chenchus are proficient at archery. They live in small settlements called penta or gudem. They construct their huts using forest essentials. Peddayana or Narayapa trees are primary resources used for construction.

As human intervention can turn a peaceful forest into a polluted place, let’s promise to conserve the flora and fauna as hundreds of animals lose their life every month due to habitat loss.
