Uncovering The History of Sanchi Stupa 2024

Back to wall

I, along with other students of Nirmal Bhartia School, embarked on an exciting journey to the enchanting and ancient realm of Bhopal. One of the highlights during our journey was visiting the Great Stupa at Sanchi.

Amidst a chaotic but fun atmosphere set in the bus, I somehow managed to rest my eyes for a while. The songs and chatter were slowly coming to an end and at that moment my eyes brightened by the sight of the magnificent Sanchi Stupa. With a height of 120 feet and a width of 54 feet, this stupa portrays a fine example of Buddhist architecture and sculpture. Built in the 3rd century BCE by Emperor Ashoka, the stupa is believed to house the rich history of ancient Buddhism.

I was excited to learn more about the great stupa and its importance. The stupa featured a large hemispherical dome symbolising the universe. The dome was topped by a central pillar that represents the connection between heaven and Earth. The stupa was surrounded by gateways called Toranas, which were placed in cardinal directions. The Toranas enlightened us about Buddha’s life and helped us understand the rise of Buddhism.

Each pillar ignited a spark of curiosity to learn more. It felt that history had surrounded us from all directions and that we had stepped onto an ancient realm. I was mesmerised to learn that these structures were built over two thousand years ago, and I couldn’t help but wonder about the ancient civilisations that roamed India then.

At Nirmal Bhartia School (NiBS), we believe that education should not be confined to the linear process of acquiring a narrow set of skills and knowledge. Instead, it should integrate a child’s growth and development into everyday life, making learning authentic, meaningful, and deeply connected to the real world. We believe that truly comprehensive education goes beyond academic excellence which includes parental participation as a vital element in a child's educational journey.
