Exploring Nature, Science, and Heritage in Kodaikanal 2026
Kodaikanal, one of the most beautiful places in Tamil Nadu, is located about 2,225 m above sea level. Surrounded by the Palani Hills, it has a cool, pleasant, and ever-changing climate, full of trees and forests. We also saw the Shola forests, which grew in small pockets between grassy hills. It was home to various flora and fauna. Notable species included the Nilgiri Marten, the only marten species found in southern India, the Brown Palm Civet, a nocturnal tree-dwelling animal, the Nilgiri Langur, and the Nilgiri Tahr, an expert climber and the state animal of Tamil Nadu. Most importantly, the Neelakurinji bloomed once every twelve years in the montane grasslands.
Just before we reached its heart, we were welcomed by Silver Cascade Falls, formed by the overflow of Kodaikanal Lake. It was created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge with a perimeter of about 5 km. It created a wonderful ambience for the whole town. Bryant Park, a botanical garden, depicted various kinds of flowers and their diversity. Guna Cave, also known as the Devil’s Kitchen, with a labyrinth of hidden chambers, became famous after the film Guna. At 2,343 m above sea level sat the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA)’s Solar Observatory, established by C. M. Smith, where astronomer John Evershed discovered the Evershed effect.
At last, we visited the Dolphin’s Nose Trek at 6,600 ft above sea level. Kodaikanal, the enchanting hill station, was overall a place of peaceful serenity and pure bliss, representing a paradise for nature lovers, adventurers, and explorers. One of the attractive parts of Kodaikanal was its culture, like the Kurinji Festival, where people celebrated the wait of twelve years for a flower to bloom, and Kodai Vizha, a ten-day celebration known as the famous summer festival. In conclusion, it was an extraordinary place where we had a life-changing experience that blew our minds.
