The Story of Somnath’s Destruction and Rebirth 2026

Back to wall

Somnath Temple is located at Prabhas Patan on the western coast of Gujarat, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This heritage site has been rebuilt many times.

The temple stands near the Triveni Sangam, where three rivers meet—the Kapila, Hiran, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. According to tradition, the Moon God Soma built the first temple to thank Lord Shiva for freeing him from a curse. In 1026 CE, Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and looted the Somnath Temple. Over the centuries, the temple was demolished several times by different rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire. In 1783, Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore constructed a new temple near the original site. After independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel led the reconstruction of the present Somnath Temple. We go there to worship God. The temple is shaped with a tower-like shikhara rather than a simple dome and is beautifully carved by hand. There were different stages in its history, and it is believed that it was first built in materials like silver, followed by gold, then wood, and finally stone.

Somnath Temple is a place where we worship Lord Shiva and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The present temple was completed in 1951 and continues to stand today. It is an important heritage site and is worth preserving, so let us take small steps to make a big difference and protect it for future generations.
