Save Tigers, Save India’s Respect & Pride 2023

Back to wall

The tiger, India’s national animal, is an endangered species endowed with unique abilities that position it at the apex of the food chain, making it a crucial component in the intricate web of a jungle ecosystem. Here are some facts about these majestic creatures:

  • A tiger’s sense of hearing is so sharp that it can differentiate even between the subtlest sounds, such as the rustling of leaves and the sound of an animal moving on the grass.
  • Their night vision is six times better than humans, giving them a distinct advantage in low-light conditions.
  • They are excellent swimmers, a skill uncommon among big cats.
  • As solitary and nocturnal hunters, they independently embark on quests for prey, utilising their sharp senses to navigate and hunt effectively.
  • Communication between the tigers takes place through roars and grunts.
  • They can take down prey weighing up to five times their body weight, showcasing their dominance as apex predators.
  • They can consume up to eighty-eight pounds of meat at one time.
  • They can survive up to ten to fifteen days without food, a testament to their adaptability in the wild.
  • In cases where tigers resort to consuming human flesh, they pose a serious threat and are labelled as man-eaters.

Today the conservation of tigers is actively pursued through the establishment of national parks and tiger reserves. One noteworthy example is Jim Corbett National Park, situated in the deep forests of Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The national park spans an area of 1318 square kilometres and is home to more than two hundred and fifty tigers and along with other animals.

From this experience we also realised that we must collectively strive to preserve the tiger population as they symbolise the pride of our nation. Let us unite in our efforts to safeguard these magnificent creatures.
