Jodhpur: Abode of the Rajputs 2023

Back to wall

Jodhpur is a jewel in the crown of Rajasthan, which is the largest state of India. Established in 1459 by Rao Jodha, one of the warrior rulers of the historical region of Rajputana, Jodhpur proudly holds the position of the second-largest city in Rajasthan. The final ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Hanwant Singh, acceded his state to the Union of India on 7 April 1949, and the state was formally dissolved in November 1956.

As described by the English writer Rudyard Kipling as “the creation of angels, fairies and giants,” Mehrangarh Fort is the most majestic of Rajasthan’s forts. The glorious Mehrangarh Fort, towering amidst the blue houses, weaves a tapestry that captures the essence of Rajasthan. The fort has seven gates. Some of these gates still bear the marks of battles.

Situated to the left of Mehrangarh Fort is Jaswant Thada, a 19th-century royal cenotaph built to commemorate Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur.

Umaid Bhavan Palace in Jodhpur is one of India’s most imposing and recently constructed palaces. ??? Following the demise of Umaid Singh in 1947, his son, Hanwant Singh, ascended to the throne as the King. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Hanwant Singh lost his life in a plane crash. At that time, his son Gaj Singh, merely four years old, inherited the responsibilities of the throne. Gaj Singh had to return to England, where he was receiving education, to fulfill his duties as the successor.

Our encounter with the distinctive culture of Jodhpur and its unique style of clothing was incredible. The grandeur, might and royalty associated with this beautiful city is reflected in its palaces and forts, effectively narrating volumes of its rich history.
