Taj Mahal: One of the Seven Wonders of the World 2023

Back to wall

Have you ever seen the Taj Mahal? Once you have seen it, you will never forget it. We visited the Taj Mahal on the 4th of March, 2023 and it truly lives up to its name ‘Crown Palace’.

Built in a span of 22 years, the Taj Mahal was built as a tomb. The tomb was built for the second wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Married to him for 19 years, Mumtaz Mahal had 14 children. Unfortunately, only seven of them survived. The daughter of a powerful nobleman, Mumtaz Mahal was originally named Arjumand Bano Begum. She was given the title of ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ by Shah Jahan which means ‘jewel of the palace’. Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 near Burhanpur in Deccan.

Built in near-perfect symmetry, the Taj Mahal displays an array of astonishing optical illusions. From the entrance of the tomb to the interiors, the Taj Mahal is truly gorgeous. It is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture with a blend of Indian, Persian and Islamic styles. However, pollution, the bane of our generation, has ruined the stunning colours and dimmed the brilliant white shine of this wonder of the world. Opposite this wonder, an unfinished tomb is located, which is believed to be a replica of the Taj Mahal in black marble. According to legend, the construction of this tomb was discontinued due to Shah Jahan’s imprisonment by his son, Aurangzeb.

It was an intriguing experience to visit one of the seven wonders of the world and learn about the story behind building it which made us realise the power that love has over us.
